This past weekend Complete Music New Mexico had the pleasure of performing at a fundraising ball hosted by UNM. We had a great time, the guests danced all through the night and were asked to come back soon to play at the next event.

One of the reasons we were asked back was that unlike the prior DJ company, we were able to help make the event a success by being there for our clients needs.

Specifically our client had this to say, “Last year the DJ just played music and sat behind the booth. They only played music they wanted to hear and had no concern for helping my organization run the event. That’s right folks, a DJ should not just play music; they also need to be there to help with your event. In the case of this event, the client asked us to be the MC for the event and make sure everything ran on time, that all the key note speakers were introduced, and that the music during dinner fit the mood for the event.

Our DJ not only helped keep the night running smoothly but also coordinated with the hall staff to know when dinner would be served, when the client should begin their closing remarks, and helped the guests know what was going on from the silent auction to the keynote speakers.

But my friend can do it……

We here at Complete Music often hear this phrase from clients when they are shopping for DJ’s. Clients often feel the need to save some money on the entertainment for their wedding day or special event and will place their event in the hands of a friend.

If your friend is a professional DJ who has had hundreds of weddings and events under their belt, then by all means accept this generous gift for your special day.

But ……

Would you trust a friend to make your wedding dress, bake your wedding cake, cook your buffet, or create your invitations?

Of Course not!!!

Unless your friends include a professional dress maker, baker, caterer and printer you NEED to have someone who understands weddings and special events. This is why you need a professional DJ.

I recently attended a wedding where the Bride asked her cousin to DJ her reception. He showed up and plugged in his IPOD to a set of store speakers, pressed play, and walked away to enjoy the rest of the night.

As a guest I had no way of asking for requests, no way of knowing when the bride and groom where going to start their cake cutting or special dances, and no real control over what music was heard….needless to say the Bride spent most of the night trying to get the DJ to play another song that he didn’t have on his IPOD, do all the announcements for her event while trying to coordinate with the event staff.

This could have been your wedding.

We recently attended a company party where the DJ was also a company employee. About halfway through the show his lights stopped working and one of his speakers blew out. This happened because he was too busy enjoying himself and not paying attention to his equipment. So when the equipment stopped working, he had no idea how to fix it and that was the end of the company party.

As I said before, it’s wonderful to have friends who want to help and if you have a professional as your friend, please by all means go with them.

However if you’re like the rest of us, you have enough things to worry about for your special event. So leave it in the hands of professionals.

It takes a good listener……

Recently Complete Music went out on a Saturday night to check out the local clubs and see what is new in the world of the club DJ’s.

We won’t mention any names but I am sad to report that the DJ we heard that night violated two of the basic first rules of business:

1. Play the music the people want to dance to.
2. The Microphone is a tool, not a toy.

We have all been there, you are at a club or a wedding, and the dance floor becomes a ghost town because the DJ forgot that it is your party not his.

As a DJ, I do have my favorite music and will try to entertain myself from time to time at a show and play a song I like. But no DJ should ever play music that does not work with the moment or the crowd. I make sure that if it’s a song I like, that the crowd and client will like it too BEFORE I press play.

In addition DJ’s should interact with the crowd in a positive way, not use the mic to hit on your guests or make inappropriate comments as our DJ this weekend did.

The success of any party depends on the DJ working with his crowd to get them in the mood to party and to provide them fuel to dance the night away. When you are making plans for your special event, make sure your all your vendors listen to what you want for your party and are professionals who will follow through with what you want. I cannot tell you how many times I have heard clients complain that their DJ or other vendor just acted as if it was their party and ignored the client’s wishes.

In the end, it takes a good listener to be a great DJ. So keep those dance requests coming.

We all want professionals who are going to remember that your day is important and that professionalism and customer service is a must.

In that spirit we here at Complete Music want to direct you to out preferred vendors link on our webpage and our facebook favorites fan page.

The lists we have created are there to help your find reputable vendors who will help you plan your next event. No matter if you are planning an office party or your 50th wedding anniversary; you need to have folks working for you who truly care about your event, not just someone who wants to cash your check.

As a part of our commitment to serving our clients and helping you with the planning for your event we have a few tips to assist you in choosing vendors for your special day. Please note that Complete Music has been in the business for over 30 years and we have heard all sorts of horror stories concerning vendors who do not give our clients 100%.

So before you hand over a deposit to a vendor, here are a few thoughts.

1. Word of mouth counts more than flashy ad’s.
Talk to prior clients or friends who have used that vendor before and find out what their experience was like. Check out a prospective vendor’s reviews on the internet or your local wedding association/merchants group website. Always ask about a vendor’s reputation before you put a deposit down. No one wants to get stuck with a fly by night DJ who takes your deposit and never shows up for your event.

2. Find out exactly what you are getting for your money.
Many DJ’s will sign you up for a show at a great rate..or so you think. Only after you get the bill will you find out that you also are on the hook for travel time, lights, microphones, or other hidden fees. We have heard this story many times over and warn all of our clients to make sure you know exactly what you are playing for .Here at Complete Music our fee includes a client planning consultation, arriving at the event at least an hour before the event to set up, standard lights and sound system, a professional DJ who may also assist you as a Emcee and event coordinator, and our Signature Show Package.

3. It’s all about you.
